Covid 19 and pest control

Its been an intensive few weeks for all pest management professionals being locked down and knowing that public health pests in Norfolk & the UK have been left to go unchecked and uncontrolled, which is one thing the USA identified as an essential service very early on.

So it comes with great relief the following government statement can be released.

Following extensive lobbying by BPCA and CEPA, pest management has been confirmed as an essential sector during the Covid-19 pandemic by George Eustice, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

According to Defra, pest management is covered in the key worker list under the "food, necessary goods & public health" section, specifically concerning hygiene & public health.

This means if you any kind of public health pest, IE rodents or certain types of insects we can treat.

As always give us a call for an informal chat and more information.

Wasps

Well we  have had an exceptional summer so far unfortunately at the expense of the garden, however wasps are also enjoying the great weather.

Calls for wasp treatment has been very busy with 7am to 7pm being a normal day, but alarmingly we have discovered  some companies are charging between £60  & £100 + plus VAT for treatment which we think is very extreme.

£40.00 all  inclusive Is what we charge, regardless if its same day.

Fair price for fair work local.

The legislative requirements relating to the use of rat bait are changing.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has tasked the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) to co-ordinate the development and delivery of the stewardship regime. The changes are to combat the issue of poisoning non-target animals.

As a result of this, customers will start to see some new labels appearing on products weighing over 1.5kg, with restrictions on purchase of any rodenticides that carry the new CRRU label unless you are able to prove that you are a professional user. The legislation also states any product already owned by an amateur user must be used by 31 March 2017.

Cluster flies

Lots of flies around windows and dead on the floor.

These are cluster flies they are not associated with dead and decaying matter, however they are a parasite.

Harmless but annoying to you because of there numbers.

Cluster flies are normally found close to grass areas, they lay there eggs in earth worm borrows, the larve hatch & find  the earth worm to burrow into and live off until its time to be an adult.

During autumn they find a loft space like yours to hibernate, they leave a pheromone telling future generations how nice your home is to live in.

The good news is we can stop this & doesn’t cost a fortune.

For info please call.

It’s all about Rats

So we are at the time of year when the second wave of rats are moving from the beet fields as it gets lifted.

They have lost the beet as there food source so they are hungry and looking for opportunities, if you feed the birds keep a close eye on how much food is being consumed if it raises by a significant amount you could be feeding the rats.

As always if you have any questions etc please feel free to get in touch we provide free advice.

Its All About Wasps

Very often people ask us what purpose do wasps serve?

In early summer wasps, like bees, pollinate plants and flowers as they feed on nectar. If we were to eradicate all wasps it would cause more problems than it would solve. So, wasps do serve a purpose and despite being a problem at certain times of the year, they are a beneficial insect. So in the natural world, wasps although irritating to humans, have their role to play.

Wasps and hornets are predatory insects and spend a lot of their time hunting and catching smaller insects to feed to their larvae (young wasp grubs). The insect prey is killed by the adult wasps and chewed up into small food packages and taken back to the nest. These food parcels are then fed to the young wasp larvae which turn the exoskeletons (chitin) of these prey insects into a sugary solution which they feed back to the adult wasps.

It is difficult to guess the exact numbers of insects which are killed by a single wasp colony through the course of a summer. It has been suggested that a single wasp nest will catch approx 5 metric tons of insects in one year. Whilst we are not entirely convinced of that number whatever it actually is, it will be substantial.

Carpet moths
Carpet Beatles
Bedbugs
Silverfish
Cockroach
Problem neighbours and all public health pests, if it's not listed call us because we can treat it.

The weather

because the weather is so wet we have a back log of wasp treatment jobs, we use a very fine dust under pressure to treat wasp nests but unfortunately damp wet conditions make this process very difficult to undertake. Hopefully dry conditions are on the horizon.
